Is our problem a configuration gap or a genuine need for custom ABAP?

We check standard SAP against your actual requirement before recommending either. A surprising number of gaps people assume need custom development are a configuration setting that was never enabled, or a standard report nobody built a variant for. ABAP earns its place when the process is genuinely particular to your business — a pricing rule, an approval chain, a document format a regulator specifies. We'll tell you which one your gap actually is before quoting.

Should we work with a large SAP consulting partner or a smaller team like BinaryBrill?

Large partners suit landscape-wide S/4HANA transformation programmes with dozens of workstreams running in parallel. For extension, integration and support work around an SAP system you already run, a smaller in-house team is usually faster to engage, cheaper per hour, and gives you continuity — the engineer who wrote the ABAP is the one who supports it. Several clients use both: a systems integrator for the core rollout, and us for everything after go-live.

What drives the cost of SAP development work?

How much of the requirement standard SAP already covers, how many modules and interfaces the change touches, and the state of the master data involved. A configuration change in one module is inexpensive; a custom development that spans finance, procurement and a third-party interface costs more because each side has to be tested against the others. We price firmly after the assessment, not before it.

Can custom ABAP survive an S/4HANA upgrade?

Yes, if it was built to. Side-by-side extensions on SAP BTP and clean custom developments that don't modify standard objects directly carry forward with normal re-testing. Code that was patched straight into standard transactions is what turns an upgrade into a rebuild. If you're carrying that kind of technical debt, we assess it as part of upgrade readiness rather than discovering it mid-project.

When is SAP development the wrong answer?

When the process in question isn't really an SAP process at all — a customer-facing portal, a mobile app, a workflow that belongs in a lighter tool. Building it inside SAP just to keep everything in one system usually costs more in licensing and development time than integrating a purpose-built application through an API or interface. We'll say so rather than finding a way to justify the SAP build.

Interfaces move only the fields the receiving system needs, not a full table export, and access to sensitive master data is controlled through SAP authorisation objects configured against your actual policy.
